Living a God Focused Life
Every Christian is responsible for living a life that is pleasing to God. That is bottom line. You cannot receive spiritual blessings if you do focus your own spiritual self to be in tune with God.
11And every tongue [frankly and openly] confess and acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Are you convinced that this is true? Is He LORD of your life? This is all about the personal today. Not what someone else is or not doing. It is okay to say, "It's all about me" in reference to this lesson.
12Therefore, my dear ones, as you have always obeyed [my suggestions], so now, not only [with the enthusiasm you would show] in my presence but much more because I am absent, work out (cultivate, carry out to the goal, and fully complete) your own salvation with reverence and awe and trembling (self-distrust, with serious caution, tenderness of conscience, watchfulness against temptation, timidly shrinking from whatever might offend God and discredit the name of Christ).
Does my behavior offend God? Does my attitude offend God? Does how I treat my child, my parent, my spouse, fellow Christians or my coworkers offend God?
13[Not in your own strength] for it is God Who is all the while effectually at work in you [energizing and creating in you the power and desire], both to will and to work for His good pleasure and satisfaction and delight. Note: He knows that we cannot do it alone. It is wonderful to know that He is all the while effectually at work in you [energizing and creating in you the power and desire], both to will and to work for His good pleasure and satisfaction and delight.
14For the whole Law [concerning human relationships] is complied with in the one precept, You shall love your neighbor as [you do] yourself.
The Laws were given as a standard. Before the Law there was no standard. When I was a child there were no speed limits on some roads. You could drive 100 MHP. Lots of people died. Jesus came to fulfill the Law. He is the Law in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.IF HE IS LORD.
15But if you bite and devour one another [in partisan strife], be careful that you [and your whole fellowship] are not consumed by one another.
If you have found the place where He would have you worship, enjoy it and be faithful there. Help told build up the fellowship and not destroy it.
16But I say, walk and live [habitually] in the [Holy] Spirit [responsive to and controlled and guided by the Spirit]; then you will certainly not gratify the cravings and desires of the flesh (of human nature without God). 17For the desires of the flesh are opposed to the [Holy] Spirit, and the [desires of the] Spirit are opposed to the flesh (godless human nature); for these are antagonistic to each other [continually withstanding and in conflict with each other], so that you are not free but are prevented from doing what you desire to do. 18But if you are guided (led) by the [Holy] Spirit, you are not subject to the Law.
When you and I are personally led by the Holy Spirit, we are not in bondage to ritualistic church laws or traditional behaviors.
20If then you have died with Christ to material ways of looking at things and have escaped from the world's crude and elemental notions and teachings of externalism, why do you live as if you still belong to the world? [Why do you submit to rules and regulations?--such as] 21Do not handle [this], Do not taste [that], Do not even touch [them], 22Referring to things all of which perish with being used. To do this is to follow human precepts and doctrines. 23Such [practices] have indeed the outward appearance [that popularly passes] for wisdom, in promoting self-imposed rigor of devotion and delight in self-humiliation and severity of discipline of the body, but they are of no value in checking the indulgence of the flesh (the lower nature). [Instead, they do not honor God but serve only to indulge the flesh.]
